In this, the most unlikeliest of seasons, it is probably fitting that St. John’s would draw as its 1st round playoff opponent the defending national champions from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. But the way things have gone this year, an upset victory against the team from the land of cheese shouldn’t surprise anyone.

As the MIAC wealth-spreading continued last Saturday, St. John’s dispatched Augsburg, got help from the Oles by winning, and the Cobbers by losing, the season’s final game is set up to be the virtual first round of the playoffs. No way could anyone have scripted this season to play out like it has.
Just like [...]

As he worked the crowd following his acceptance speech at the induction ceremonies for the Hall of Fame For Coaches Whose Last Name Ends In a Vowel, Coach Gags was approached by a man who had worked his way through the throng of well-wishers. The man, later identified as Joe the Football Player, made his [...]

Monkey Stomp. Man it feels good to say that. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, a monkey stomp is a victory by a margin of 21 points or more. Last year, 6 of the 12 games played by SJU were stomps. This year, well, the term hasn’t been used often in the Johnnie football lexicon.

Grandpa’s been gone for 20 years now, but as I make my way in life, one of his sayings will frequently pop into my mind. As I’ve watched the St. John’s football team this season, I can’t help but be reminded of one of those sayings:
“Once you have a reputation for being and early riser,” my Grandpa used to tell me, “You can sleep ’til noon everyday.”
Ahhh…much better!

After three weeks of offensive performance anxiety, it was gratifying to finally find a remedy for what was ailing the Johnnies. Quarterback Jordan Hansel stood tall for St. John’s with a decisive homecoming victory over Gustavus. Hansel showed no signs of projectile dysfunction, with 283 yards passing, 3 for TD’s, plus one rushing TD. It really is all about scoring.

It is much easier to accept a loss where both teams played a pounding, skilled game and you come away thinking one bad play here, or a great one there, or a bad call, perhaps made the difference. But last week’s demonstration of offensive dysfunction left me with a taste in my mouth that even Hamm’s won’t chase away. I wish there was a pill for this.

The MIAC football schedule will finally begin Saturday as the Cobbers of Concordia come to Collegeville. The Cobbs are excited to show off their new retro (is that an oxymoron?) uniform colors. Perhaps they should stick with what they had if their 2008 opener is any indication. For the first time in over 80 years, [...]

If you’ve stopped in at the La Playette in St. Joseph in the last 34 years, (if you’re reading this, I’d say chances are good that you have) you’ve no doubt heard the friendly, booming voice of proprietor-par-excellence Mark Zimmer greet you with his signature line: “Let’s have one!”
This week marks the 50th anniversary of [...]
