Pick your cliche, Saturday’s game is setting up to be an epic battle, a clash of the titans, a battle of the unbeatens. No matter how you say it, this game has the makings of a modern version of the Battle of Stiklestad.
The game at Carleton last week was too close for comfort for Johnnie fans, especially after how the Jays seemed to click the week before vs. Concordia. Many excuses heard included the weather and a seeming “off” day for our QB Alex Kofoed. But my feeling was that Knight’s Coach Kurt Ramler had his game plan ready. With his knowledge of the St. John’s playbook, his squad executed their plan to keep Kofoed off-balance to near perfection. But thanks to the running of Mike Patnode, the foot of Russell Gliadon, and the Kofoed to Chace Pollock pass on 4th down in the 4th quarter, the Jays were able to chalk up another “W”. Like a Hollywood script, the student learns yet another lesson from the master.
So, will it be out of the pan and into the fire as SJU takes on the St. Olaf Florwegians? The Ole offense is smokin’ hot, which should be a great match-up for the always en fuego Johnnie defense. The pressure will be on the Ole O-line to try to stop our defense, and allow Ole QB Matt Penz enough time to hit his favorite receivers Horace Gant and Andrew Schmiesing. With enough pressure on Gant by the Johnnie’s Tenacious D, look for one of the Johnnie D-backs John Cloeter, Sam Gervais, Dominic Haik or Kevin Boegel to come up with the pick of destiny.
It should be a glorious Homecoming day at the pine curtain. The maples are in full glory, the Johnnies are poised to hand the Oles their first loss and the forecast is for partly cloudy skies and warm temps. Sounds like good koolaid drinking weather. Be sure to start your day with a stop at St. John’s World-Famous Stiftungsfestivities before the game. The best new Ole joke gets you a glass of koolaid.

LENA GREETED Ole at the door of their apartment when he came home from work.
“Guess what,” said Lena. “Do you remember we’ve been talking about getting a more expensive apartment?”
“What about it?” said Ole.
“Well,” said Lena. “We don’t have to look. The landlord just raised the rent!”
Make plans on Sunday to visit the 5th Annual Collegeville Colors. This great event features bouja, dutch-oven apple cobbler, music, theater and great company from 1-5 p.m. on the Prep School grounds.
OK, one more:
SVEN AND OLE went to the lake, rented a boat and went fishing. They eventually found a great spot and quickly caught their limit. On the way back to the dock Ole said, “That surely was good fishing. How will we ever find that place again?”
Sven said, “Don’t worry. While we were there, I put an X on the side of the boat.”
“But that won’t work!” Ole said.
“Why not?”
“How do we know we’ll get the same boat next time?”
See y’all on Saturday. GO JOHNNIES!
