The knuckle bumping, hand holding, fanny slapping first year coach of St. Thomas was served his first dose of “Johnnie Magic”.
The BEHR Radio Broadcast Team Names Joe Luke Their Defensive Player Of The Game!
Welcome to the MIAC Glen Caruso.
UST coach Glen Caruso has been busy. After stealing the hearts of The Macalester Scots and then several high-profile recruits from St. John’s University Coach John Gagliardi, the new University of St. Thomas football coach found Saturday’s game stolen from him. The Caruso-led revival of the UST football program, whose fortunes as of late would have been better served in the confessional, appear likely to endure a period of penance.
Following a 25 yard pass from Tommie quarterback David Sauer to Fritz Waldvogel at the St. John’s 1 yard line with one minute left in the game, the rebirth of the Tommie football program was almost complete. Really? The same Johnnie defense that coaches Fasching and Haugen relied on to buoy a stagnant SJU offense was still on the field and ready to protect the less than 36 inches that separated Caruso from football heaven. Two plays and one football miracle later the ball mysteriously bounced from the hands of Tommie running back Ryan McCarthy into the mits of Johnnie defensive player Kyle Schroeder.
Game over.
Coach Glen Caruso, who at age 34 is the head man of his second team in two years, was atop the conference standings until late Saturday afternoon. That was of course until John Gagliardi and the Johnnies found themselves on the short end of the recruiting trail, underdogs on the road and down the conference standings looking up at the Tommies. The potential game winning touchdown by Ben Wartman on their final drive was called down before the ball crossed the goal line. Video produced by the Tommie athletic department showed otherwise.
Give Coach Caruso credit for recruiting some of the top small college talent in Minnesota including UST frosh Fritz Waldvogel, Dan Brown and Greg Morse. As was reported by Star Tribune writer Dean Spiros on June 29th, Brown and Waldvogel were both destined for Collegeville before being swept away to UST by the former New Yorker Glen Caruso.
For any other MIAC team, fate would surely come calling after stealing a game the way the Johnnies did Saturday. A John Gagliardi 42-14 record vs the Tommies would prove that otherwise.
