Today’s Monday morning report is going to be a bit abbreviated and slightly late following a weekend away from Collegeville closing up the family cabin. With no internet available and only snails pace dial-up service, the writer was forced to abate a moderate level of Johnnie anxiety via the “live stats” link on the GoJohnnies.com website.

With Saturday’s shellacking of the Hamline Pipers the Johnnies did precisely what was required. Pairing Gagliardi’s 457th victory, the upcoming game with a 4-1 UST squad and a beaming first place Carleton team, St. John’s has the opportunity to show the rest of the MIAC and division III football the changing of the small college football “guard” is not quite ready to pass on it’s rather large hold on the throne.

The gaping vacuum this year in the St. John’s offense is rapidly being filled by #89 Ben Vanderheyden who blew past Piper d-backs with six receptions, three touchdowns and 195 yards receiving. Vanderheyden’s performance combined with the debut of freshman running back Jimmy Loonan will provide the offense to beat all of the reaming conference opponents who sit ahead of the Johnnies including next weekend’s UST Tommies.

Just as The Bethel Royals are bound to beat the Johnnies, SJU is destined to beat St. Thomas.

By the way, the fish were biting this weekend, just like the Hamline Pipers were biting on Ben Vanderheyden’s moves all day long. A perfect time to be heading to Cretin Avenue to begin the sweep of the conference leaders.

Stop back later this afternoon for a TouchDownTommy special edition “JohnnieFootall.com”! TDT has a special guest and interview that he’ll share with you as a prelude to a great football week and game next Saturday on Cretin Avenue.
