Maybe you’ve seen him, the man with the stubby little pencil and the Clark Kent horn rimmed glasses. He’s taking notes, asking questions and at every opportunity scratching his rather thick grey mane to wonder aloud about those he meets new and old. Along with that very stubby pencil he carries a folded piece of paper with which to take those notes, easily concealed in the back pocket of his blue denim jeans. Bob Wicker is a recent Walter Reger Distinguished Alumnus Award winner and immerses himself and his readers in the “Who’s Who” of Johnnie friends and alumni. In the early 60’s as a new student at St. John’s Bob was known as “Theodosius” because of his brashness and outspokenness. These days “Theo” relies on SJU’s Unofficial Underground Newsletter as his bully pulpit to announce all things Johnnie related. The following is an excerpt from Bob’s most recent newsletter with some thoughts about the upcoming game this Saturday vs. Marietta College. These reflections are not official school policy and are merely the thoughtfulness of one man who has given considerable energy to his alma mater.
…I mentioned “drinking” above. This is a very sensitive issue for Campus Administration and especially Security; school rules forbid public drinking outside of very controlled venues on campus. If Security personnel pass by and spy open liquor and beer containers, they will toss out the contents and remove any other such spirits from the scene. On the other hand, St. John’s is very pleased to have responsible, mature adults enjoying themselves in this celebratory pregame fashion and so, if a person were to bring a few beers to share inconspicuously (and by that I mean, pouring a beer into a plastic cup as unobtrusively as possible and hauling one’s own empties away in one’s car trunk), then Security will agree to leave sleeping dogs lie, so to speak. This very subdued imbibing has not been a problem thus far and SJU sincerely hopes that with more alums becoming involved, open and God forbid, excessive drinking doesn’t take a higher profile. To that end, those of us who have been regulars at the Stiftungsfestivities will take it upon ourselves to explain the matter to newcomers who need polite instruction.
