Johnnie/Tommie week is traditionally an exciting week. Fans generally show up in droves to witness the storied rivalry. This rivalry has lacked luster in recent years, though, as the last time the Tommies notched a victory against the Johnnies was 1997. While head coach Don Roney and his staff have been able to put together winning seasons, they have been nothing more than mediocre in recent years. Recent games have been remembered as much for the Stiftungsfestivities, rent-a-cops, and streakers as much as for the games themselves. After two consecutive years at Saint Thomas, the game returns to Collegeville this Saturday, where Roney and his 2-4 Tommies will match up with John Gagliardi and his 8-0 Johnnies.

Young Pipers Face a Challenge

- 2007 hamline game
First-year head coach Jim Good and his Hamline Pipers welcome the visiting Johnnies to cozy Klas Field this Saturday. Good, a Linfield College graduate who has spent the past 6 seasons at Texas Lutheran, faces a daunting challenge in preparing for the Johnnies this week. Hamline has been one of the most hapless Johnnie opponents in recent years. Since 2000, the Johnnies have outscored the Pipers 382-20. In fact, the last time the Pipers scored more than 7 points in a game versus the Johnnies was 1998, when they lost 49-13. Based on their 2-4 (0-4 MIAC) record this season, I don’t see things changing Saturday.

It was a beautiful day for football in Saint Peter today, and the Johnnies quickly dispatched the Gustie’s hope for a homecoming victory. The Johnnies started strong and never looked back as they notched a 40-0 defeat of the home team.

The Gustavus football team started 2007 with a bang, rolling up 3 straight wins in addition to the 4 consecutive wins they finished the 2006 season with. They have stumbled the past two weeks with games versus St. Olaf and Bethel. This weekend, the Johnnies will invade Saint Peter in hopes of handing the Gusties their third straight loss. Here’s a rundown of the 2007 Gusties.

Homecoming is a special time at Saint John’s. The fall colors are usually in full splendor, and football season is well underway. This weekend, alumni from near and far will gather to witness what could be the toughest test yet for the Johnnies. Head coach Chris Meidt and his 18th ranked Oles will be in Collegeville on Saturday. Both teams enter the contest with an unblemished record, but only one will leave that way.

After two consecutive drubbings of overmatched opponents at Clemens Stadium, head coach John Gagliardi leads his Johnnies into Laird Stadium in Northfield, MN to battle the Carleton Knights, coached by former Johnnie quarterback Kurt Ramler. If you’ve followed the Johnnies for a while, you’ll remember Ramler as the 1996 MIAC MVP. Ramler now bleeds blue [...]

Saturday, September 8th marks the second consecutive year that Saint John’s University will take on the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Although the Johnnies handed the Falcons a 41-9 thumping last year, UW-RF looks to be much improved in 2007, handing Hope College (Michigan) a 54-24 loss last Saturday. The visiting Falcons limited Hope to 344 [...]
