Bouncing Aluminum Bleachers: Every big play or 3rd down situation the Bethel student body will conduct the most annoying cheer in the MIAC when they jump up and down on the metal bleachers chanting “Deeeefense, Deeeefense, Deeeefense…” There is nothing better than converting in these game situations and being able to hear a pin drop [...]

Bouncing Aluminum Bleachers: Every big play or 3rd down situation the Bethel student body will conduct the most annoying cheer in the MIAC when they jump up and down on the metal bleachers chanting “Deeeefense, Deeeefense, Deeeefense…” There is nothing better than converting in these game situations and being able to hear a pin drop from the homestands shortly thereafter.

Special Teams Play: Pay close attention to the efforts of the punt and kick return teams for both sides. In a matchup that is predicted by many to be relatively equal, the ability to create/control field position could be one of the game’s deciding factors. Surely Johnnie fans remember the horror of Nate Klint’s blurr as he raced to 2 Kickoff returns in the 2000 shootout at Royal Stadium (43-36 Royals).

Lack of Parking On Campus: The parking layout at Bethel U isn’t conducive to holding large event crowds. It will be a free for all and the earlier you get to campus the better. Nobody wants to take that off campus shuttle if at all possible. Additionally getting there early allows for extra tailgating time.

Overflow Johnnie crowd: It may be cold, rainy, and borderline miserable, but the cardinal and blue faithful will show up in droves for the game. A short drive for most of the Twin Cities alumni and a MIAC conference championship on the line are key ingredients for a packed Royals Stadium. I just hope they have planned well at Bethel and don’t run out of concessions in the 1st half which has become all too common when the Johnnies take their act on the road.

Trick Plays: Both teams have shown they aren’t afraid to pull all their tricks outta the bag for this annual grudge match. In fact, the Johnnies started the 2003 409th win game with a pass from Blake Elliott that was intercepted.

Player Injury Status: Bethel starting running back, Logan Flannery, was banged up last week against Augsburg and my sources tell me he isn’t close to 100% for this week. This would be a big loss for the Royals and change their gameplan significantly if he can’t go. The Johnnies were blessed with a well timed bye week for Brett Saladin, Jason Primus, and others to get healthy.

First Quarter: Knowledgeable football minds often say games are won and lost in the 4th quarter, however, this week the beginning of the game is critical for both teams. If Bethel can ride the wave of emotion and their home field advantage to a couple of early touchdowns they will be in a great position to win. Nobody has success playing from behind against the Johnnies. Early turnovers or mistakes will determine the outcome of the game.

Field Conditions: The Johnnies’ fans often joke about the opponents watering down the field the week before the game by turning the sprinklers on to “in theory” slow the Johnnies speed down. If the natural grass at Royals Stadium is slippery or gets torn up quickly between the hash marks this would have to favor Bethel who relies heavily on the running game of QB Ben Wetzell and RBs Logan Flannery/Jared Bangs.

Key Coaching Decisions: Steve Johnson has made his fair share of boneheaded coaching decisions in recent years against the Johnnies. Watch to see if John Gagliardi decides to kick Field Goals or go for it deep in Bethel territory. Neither team has an especially fantastic kicking game, so the play calling on 4th downs will be critical.

Johnnie Tailgate: The Johnnie tailgate will be located in the Soho lot as you enter the Bethel campus off Snelling Ave beginning around 9am. Don’t be afraid to come join the crew, introduce yourself, bring some beverages/food to share, and taste the world famous Arth chili, burgers, brats, and Jell-O.

Nick Gunderson: This kid eats weak, inexperienced offensive lines for lunch.

Alex Kofoed: 4th year starter is at home, on the turf, and playing his last game against UST.

Jerry Haugen: Defensive coordinator extraordinaire will have schemes to confuse and baffle the young Tommie offense.

Brian Weber: Speed kills. That and the combination of great hands, leaping ability, and inexperienced corners spell a big day for the #1 Johnnie WR.

Ryan Wimmer: Middle linebacker is developing into a premier player. Always seems to be around the ball and making tackles sideline to sideline.

Rich Hall: The biggest Johnnie superfan is watching from the big party in the sky. Nobody hated the Toms more than Mr. H.

Rat Pak: The Pak will get the Tommies to do something ridiculously stupid and embarrassing all at their own will. Pay attention it never fails.

Tommie student body: They’ll be too busy socializing and talking about the latest Abercrombie and Fitch winter fashion than to cheer during the game. Over/under on number of times the “we don’t care about football” is uttered from the Purple mouths is 837.

Don Roney: 0-9 career versus SJU and generally considered the worst coach in the MIAC. Give the man a lifetime contract.

John Gagliardi: You know John will not allow the team to look past the Tommies as the cardinal and blue await a MIAC title game in 2 weeks against Bethel. Ordinary players, doing ordinary things, extraordinarily well.

Mary Hardin-Baylor v. Wisconsin-Whitewater on Oct. 27: Currently #2 and #3 in the country. If everyone takes care of business this is setting up to be a clash of the titans. This contest has all kinds of West Region playoff implications.

St. John’s v. Bethel on Nov. 10:This game is likely to determine the MIAC conference champion once again. It sure seems like this is becoming an annual occurrence. The game is at Bethel where the Johnnies have lost in 1999 and 2000.

Wisconsin-Whitewater v. Wisconsin-Steven’s Point on Oct. 20:The Warhawks have to get past an up and coming Pointer squad unscathed before they get a shot at UMHB. Both teams come in undefeated and control of the best Division 3 conference is at stake.

Central v. Wartburg on Nov. 10: The premier rivalry game of the IIAC each season and per is usual it is likely to determine the conference champ and subsequently the automatic bid to the playoffs.

Ripon v. St. Norbert on Oct. 20: The MWC conference title and automatic bid into the playoffs is at stake when these undefeated squads face off this weekend in DePere, WI.

California Lutheran v. Occidental on Oct. 27: The SCIAC title and lone entry to the NCAA playoffs is at stake between likely undefeated teams. The team left standing will likely host the NWC champ in the 1st round of the playoffs.

Bethel v. St. Olaf on Oct. 20: The teacher and the student (Steve Johnson BU and Chris Meidt STO) square off in Northfield trying to hold onto playoff hopes. If St. Olaf wins they effectively knock Bethel out of consideration with 2 West Region losses, while if Bethel wins they keep MIAC title hopes alive. This would set up quite a game (providing BU and SJU win out) in Arden Hills as previously mentioned at #2.

Pacific Lutheran v. Linfield on Oct. 20: The two national powers from the NWC who’ve both won national titles in recent years and maintain a great annual rivalry go at it this weekend in McMinnville. It is a must win for both teams in a conference filled with parity in 2007. This is the first of many big games to round out the regular season for these teams.

Linfield v. Whitworth on Nov. 3: The Wildcats travel to Spokane to seek revenge for the loss at the Catdome last season. There is plenty of bad blood here and there is a distinct possibility that this game will determine who wins the NWC.

Central v. Dubuque on Oct. 20: Central must continue to take care of their business as Goliath of the IIAC to set up the big matchup in Waverly in a few weeks. This should be a very competitive game between upper-tier Iowa teams.

Honorable Mention: Whitworth v. Azusa Pacific Oct. 20, Whitworth v. Willamette Oct. 27, Pacific Lutheran v. Willamette Nov. 10, St. Thomas v. St. John’s Oct. 27

MLB Playoffs: Catch some of the baseball playoffs in HD on TBS. The parity in baseball this year is extraordinary leading to some electric games and great finishes. If you don’t have HDTV yet, make it a priority. Once you’ve seen something in HD going back to regular channels is like watching through saran wrap.

Round of Golf: Play a round at your favorite course with some friends. Most golf courses have nice Fall special rates and it is usually much easier to get a tee time at the better Links. Try to play somewhere where the leaves are changing for an especially enlightening experience.

Take a Short Trip: The Fall is traditionally the slowest travel time for the airlines/hospitality industry. Take advantage of some terrific air/hotel package deals to Las Vegas, New York City, or San Diego.

Guthrie Theater: The new Guthrie is absolutely beautiful. Plan an evening with a bite to eat downtown Minneapolis and a show at the theater. This is a gem of the Twin Cities.

Bryant-Lake Bowl:It doesn’t matter if you don’t enjoy bowling. Go for one of the best burgers in the metroplex and have a pint of Guinness. This uber cool spot has attained cult-like status.

College Football Thursday: ESPN has a weekly game usually featuring a great matchup. Order a pizza and saddle up in the recliner. It just is so much more enjoyable to watch the college game instead of the NFL on Sundays.

Wild Game:Head downtown St. Paul to “The X” for the best game there is in person. The action is fast and furious. The building has been ranked the top arena in professional sports and the raucous crowds help it live up to the billing. Stop at Patrick McGovern’s for a delicious turkey sandwich or Cossetta’s for their famous pizza before the game.

Cabelas:If you enjoy the outdoors in Minnesota there can’t be a more exhilarating spot to browse than here. Hunting season is fast approaching and they’ve got all the gadgets & gizmos. At the very least stop off on Hwy 94 on the way to Collegeville!

The Office:Steve Carell has hit it big in America. This guy is probably the #1 comedian of this era with this highly successful TV show on NBC (Thursday nights) and numerous box office hits at the movie theater. If you’ve never tuned in be sure to do it. The humor is second to none.

Uptown: This is a Minneapolis favorite. The proximity to the Lakes allow for a stroll or bike ride in the crisp Fall air. Uptown is such a unique eclectic mix of funky coffee shops, uber chic restaurants, shopping, and great people watching. This is about as diverse as it gets in Minnesota and worth an occasional visit.

Melrose: Any place that sends WR Blake “Bottled Lightning” Elliott, QB Tom Linnemann, WR Ben Sieben, DB Shawn Schoenberg, OL Jason Primus, and DL Brian Zirbes belongs at the top of this list. I don’t think anyone can say one school has sent more impact players to the Johnnies in recent years.

Sartell: The local connection is strong here. Former All-American WR Adam Herbst, OG Josh Pantzke, DB Jason Pflipsen, DL Ryan Bielat, DL Matt Darling, and LB Jeff Schulte all hail from the St. Cloud suburb.

St. Thomas Academy: The Cadets have been fertile recruiting grounds lately. RB Chris Moore, OL Brothers Chris and Andrew Salvato, and DB Andy Hover have all come north to Collegeville with great success.

St. Cloud Cathedral: The Catholic boys are staying home in record numbers and the Johnnies are the beneficiaries. OG Dan Kosel, OG Brian Mathiasen, LB Ryan Wimmer, and OG Adam Schleper are among the notables.

Eden Prairie: Former Johnnie TE Mike Grant must be saying the right things about St. John’s. He continues to send some of his fine players from multiple state championship teams to Collegeville including C Josh Dirlam, OG Justin Cass, DL Steve LeVoir, and OL Jason Brodmerkel.

Mahtomedi: The Zephyrs have had lots of success at the high school level and the Johnnies have had some of the better players come wear the Red and White. Among them are DL Kevin McNamara, RB Mike Lofboom, and DB Kevin Boegel.

Woodbury: Preseason All-American DL Nick Gunderson hails from Woodbury along with former Johnnie standout Kicker Joe Rotundi. Let’s hope that former Johnnie All-American LB, Beau LaBore, can start sending more elite players behind the Pine Curtain.

Becker: Current Johnnie wrestling coach and linebacker coach, LB Brandon Novak, is a Bulldogs alum along with Mr. Versatility QB/TE Corey Stanger. John Gagliardi’s grandson is their QB this season.

Rocori: Four year starter, QB Alex Kofoed, will probably go down among a long lineage of great quarterbacks at St. John’s. He could hold nearly all the records when it’s all said and done. P/K Zach Reif is among others who made the short trip to Collegeville.

Totino-Grace: The Eagles have been winning state championships like they are easy. They are sending some of the great players to Collegeville including brothers OL Luke Schumacher and DL Mike Schumacher, DB Bobby Klint, and DB Dominic Haik.

Others Receiving Votes: Albany (Denne, Blackmore), Alexandria (Gearman, Luke), Brainerd (Zauhar, Gervais), Edina (McCambridge, Diley), Hastings (Wagner), Wayzata (Crees, Vanderheyden)

Patrick’s (St. Peter): This place has the trifecta. Great food, great beverages, and plenty of room. This is a phenomenal joint to watch more games on a Saturday afternoon/evening or just unwind after the big game.

Mick’s Office (Moorhead): Mick’s is steeped in tradition over generations of Cobbers. Stop in for a tasty burger and some of the chips. You won’t be disappointed by the friendly staff either.

Rueb ‘N’ Stein (Northfield): Close to both Carleton and St. Olaf, this place oozes character. Bring the kids for the large game room, check out their extensive menu, and stay late for the live music.

The Nook (St. Paul): Directly across the street from Cretin-Derham Hall, they have won best burger of the Twin Cities on several occasions. Enjoy a Juicy Lucy with a pint of Nook Red and all is right in the world. A classic neighborhood establishment.

Sally’s Saloon (Minneapolis): Located off Washington Avenue on the U of MN campus and near Augsburg sits this gem. Loaded with college kids after the Gophers game and always a fun, energetic atmosphere. Great people watching.

Sal’s (St. Joseph): This quintessential college bar serves the world’s best patty melt with cheesy browns. Play some pool or throw some darts. All the TVs will have the big late afternoon football games on.

O’Gara’s (St. Paul): Down Snelling Ave. from Hamline, this Irish tavern has space for special events and is always accommodating to larger groups. Live music, delicious stew, and a warm comfortable feeling for those chilly October afternoons.

Granite City (Roseville): Located near Rosedale Mall and of the same fame as the popular St. Cloud location. Here you’ll find gigantic portions, plenty of microbrews to choose from, and a popular spot following games.

La Playette (St. Joseph): The most popular spot to gather following Johnnie football games. Not much of a food selection, but lots of space and games (pool tables, video games, darts). Don’t forget to grab a Gary’s Pizza across the street and bring it in they welcome it.

Tiffany’s (St. Paul): The Tommies’ students establishment of choice. Good food, cool neighborhood, live music, and plenty of TVs for enjoying the games with your friends and family.

Walk: Take a stroll through the gorgeous woods that surround St. John’s. The trees tower over you, the silence and tranquility are second to none, and the sheer beauty of the forest can take your breath away.

Johnnie Bread: Make your way up to the Great Hall (directly adjacent to the Abbey Church) for this fresh, on-site, Monk-produced goodness that is a staple of campus life. Take a couple loafs for the road.

Eat at the Refectory: Grab a couple of friends or the entire family for the brunch at “The Reef” as it is affectionately referred to on campus. Enjoy the plentiful food choices, share a table with a Monk, have a good laugh, and get some food in your belly before the big game.

Visit the Wood Shop: Located in the “Industrial” compound, you will find a place run by the friendly Monks who will be glad to show you around. Here they make many items used on a daily basis on campus instead of purchasing them from outside vendors. You’ll be amazed at the quality and attention to detail.

Apple Orchard: Is there a better place in the world each Fall than the Apple Orchard in Collegeville located off Fruit Farm Road as you enter campus. Buy a dozen of the delicious apples, take a hayride, sip some apple cider, and soak in the surroundings.

Watab Island: Arrive early on Gameday, pack a picnic lunch, the fishing poles, and head out to Watab for a little “getting in touch with nature”. Throw a line in and maybe make it a shore lunch style picnic. There is plenty of room to run around or play a little catch with the football.

Swim in the Sag: Enjoy the cool waters of Lake Sagatagan with a refreshing swim. The beach is a nice spot to rent a kayak for a little paddling around the Lake or to take in the scenery.

St. John’s Bible: Visit the Hill Manuscript Library adjacent to the Alcuin Library. See the 5 million dollar project replica in progress. No matter your religious affiliation or lack thereof it is quite an amazing piece. Do yourself a favor and be sure to check this out!

SJU Book Store: Check out the extraordinary St. John’s book store in Sexton Commons. Here you’ll find a little bit of everything for the cardinal and blue. There is lots of apparel, interesting books, and a helpful staff to assist you. Have fun and bring the credit card.

Pottery: Go see world renown pottery artist, Richard Bresnahan, at his pottery studio. You’ll be amazed at the attention to detail in his work. Bring the art aficionado and they will surely be impressed.

Ice Cold Beverages: This is an absolute necessity. Whether you are drinking Miller Lites, Diet Dr. Peppers, Olde Johnnie Ale, Fat Tire, Hamm’s, or Kool-aid you must have a thirst quenching Red Cup at all times.

Stiftungsfest Burger: The famous hamburger brought to Collegeville by Johnnie Red has reached iconic status. The seasoned burger from Mackenthun and Wischnack Meats in Young America, MN is a delicious treat for even the most demanding Cheeseburger connoisseurs.

Wild Rice Bratwursts: Every tailgate party worth its weight in gold needs a tasty wild rice brat. This Minnesota/Wisconsin favorite tastes especially grand with an ice cold libation.

Polish Sausages: Real aficionados will have their Polish flown in from the most authentic Polish meat markets in Chicago. Once you have a good, hearty Polish you’ll never eat another hot dog.

Bathrooms: You need facilities close if at all possible. Nothing ruins a good tailgate more than having to walk 6 blocks and then wait in line for the eternal cleanliness of a Porta-Potty. Do yourself a favor and scout out the location for best accessibility to restrooms.

Music/Radio: Good tunes are essential to a great tailgating experience (Credence Clearwater Revival or Jimmy Buffett). It is always nice to be able to listen to the Twins/Gophers/Various other good college football games while relaxing before the big game. Take it from an experienced tailgater, it’s no fun without the BEAT!!

Proper Dress: You can’t show up in your “Camp Counselor” Hawaiian shirt or your wing tips and be taken seriously. Wear your team colors/apparel with pride and dress for the conditions. If it is a scorching hot September day, don’t forget the sunscreen or you’ll be paying for it for days.

Good Friends: Generally speaking, the folks who tailgate are friendly, salt of the earth people. Don’t be afraid to join fans of the opposition and mix it up with a little pregame trash talking. Good rivalries breed respect and long term friendships.

Charcoal Grills: I can’t emphasize this enough. The difference between cooking with propane vs. charcoal is huge. The flavors and smells mean football is in the air. Be sure to have plenty of grill space and extra charcoal. It is critical to be able to cook lots of food as fast as possible when the crowds get big.

Games: Don’t forget to bring a football to toss around in the parking lot. Other tailgating favorites include Polish golf, Beanbag Toss, and a deck of cards for the impromptu game of poker.

St. John’s: There is not a better place on earth than The Natural Bowl on a crisp fall Saturday afternoon. The leaves, the rabid atmosphere, the 8K+ fans

St. Thomas: O’Shaughnessy Stadium is a classic, time-tested, gorgeous venue smack dab in the middle of a picturesque neighborhood. Only drawback is having grandstands on just one side of the field. The FieldTurf brings the playing surface into the upper echelon of the MIAC

Hamline: Klas Field is simply a state-of-the-art facility. They did a terrific job with the remodel and it shows

Gustavus Adolphus: Stunning new construction on the hill in St. Peter. Beautiful synthetic surface field, exquisite press box, and clearly a much needed new addition for recruiting at GAC

Concordia: Jake Christiansen Stadium is the Frozen Tundra in Minnesota. Rabid fans, perennially loud and proud of their Cobbers, make this a difficult place to play. Real tangible home-field advantage

St. Olaf: Picturesque field. Not the best of the MIAC but certainly nothing to be ashamed of

Bethel: Loud student body makes this a tough place to play. Always a packed house, but lacking in any real long term “character”. Use of the aluminum bleachers to jump up and down while chanting De-Fense, De-Fense is the most obnoxious feature

Carleton: Nothing noteworthy to oooh and aaah over. But definitely a step above the facility at Augsburg

Augsburg: Squeezed into one city block that leaves much to be desired. No distinguishing features, definitely belongs in the cellar. Only saving grace is the SprinTurf
