St. John’s was perfect in 15 first round playoff games beginning in 1987 however the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater ground game ended that streak.

Warhawk Running Back Levell Coppage - Photo By Sowden

Saturday could not have started more perfectly for the Johnnies: Limiting the UWW Warhawks to 17 yards on their first drive, receiving the ensuing punt with the wind at their back and then combining a beautifully orchestrated mix of runs and passes over 12 plays that ended with a short touchdown pass to running back Jakob Reding.

There were other highlights on the day that ultimately ended with a 37 – 7 Whitewater victory however few of them occurred on the actual playing field.

Departing the Twin Cities at 4:45am Saturday morning there was a light coating of snow on the freeway heading east into Wisconsin on Interstate 94. Several years ago in 2006 a heavy snow fell in Southeastern Wisconsin and delayed the start of the Johnnie versus Warhawk game nearly one hour. This year the snow ended just east of Eau Claire, WI making the rest of the trip relatively smooth.

The entire 5 hour journey was dotted with blaze orange as Wisconsinites celebrated their deer opener with mass appeal. My travel partner and I were amazed we weren’t run over by leaping deer dashing from captors or blasted by any number of slugs whizzing through the freeway’s wooded areas. Saturday didn’t require a firearm to claim your animal as there was plenty to pick from along the road side.

Earlier on Friday we were warned the UWW broadcast team was looking for someone from the tailgate crew to interview during their Saturday morning pregame show. It appeared one of our JF.com founding members would be selected however it was the “Godfather” of Stiftungsfestivities, “Johnnie Red” Mike Fahey that did the honors. And a fine interview Mike gave to the “Voice” of the Warhawks, Tom Pattison. In typical judicial form Mike recounted the eight year history of Johnnie tailgating and the origin of the name adorning these pregame gatherings –“Stiftungsfestivities”.

Zooming east along 94 at 8:30 am wile listening to the Warhawks early morning pregame and Johnnie Red detailing the Johnnie experience was the perfect entrée’ to what would be another exciting playoff season. Most Johnnie fans knew Saturday’s game would be a difficult match-up against the defending national champs but with last second season ending victories they also knew the possibility of victory existed.

What committed Johnnie fans saw first hand in Whitewater was a Warhawks program that will challenge Mount Union at the Stagg Bowl in mid-December and compete for championships well into the future.

Big time Players from Milwaukee and Chicago now dot the Warhawks roster bringing with them big-time ability and a competiveness several notches above the MIAC. The two feature running backs for the Warhawks, Levell Coppage and Antwan Anderson, would seriously compete for playing time on the Gopher football team. Place kicker Jeff Schebler is also good enough to compete on the division I level booming field goals with precision from 41 yards out.

It’s up to the Johnnie Football program, the University and it’s alumni to figure out how to catch-up with this new Division III powerhouse. Of course there are academics to consider, the player base needed to gather the next generation of superstars from and the actual recruiting required to supplement an offense in need of superstar playmakers.

Here’s one fan who’s hoping a few specialized student athletes can be located to fill a roster that will contend in 2009 for the conference championship and another run at the DIII playoffs. I’m also hoping “ground round” applies to the meat grinder approach the Johnnies will employ next year in dismantling the Warhawks and their coach Lance Leipold.

•	In this season of thanks I’d like to express appreciation to all the great Johnnie fans that’ve made 2008 another spectacularly entertaining fall football season. A special thanks to our advertisers who allow us to work with the talented Mr. Shoes, The JohnnieFootball.com webmaster. A personal thanks to all the committed folks who contribute to this website and provide what I believe is unmatched content anywhere in the country either at the college or professional level. And of course thank you to the players for their commitment to not only Johnnie Football but also to their academics and continuation of the Johnnie tradition. Most of all I’d like to honor the parents of Johnnie Football, to your support for your sons and willingness to share your Saturdays with us.

The trip to southeastern Wisconsin to take on the Warhawks from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater has become a familiar one to the Johnnie Football team as well as the Johnnie Nation. For three out of the past four seasons, the Warhawks have ended the Johnnies’ season. We all know that football is a zero sum game, for every winning team there is an offsetting team that loses, but given the opportunity to prepare a game plan for a team more than twice, I will take my chances with the Johnnies. The Warhawks are a great team; after all they are the defending Division III National Champions and their play yesterday shows they are not going to relinquish the crown easily.

The Johnnies won the coin-toss and elected to defer to the 2nd half and as a result they kicked off the ball to the Warhawks to begin the game. The Johnnie defense dug in and stopped the Warhawks on their first possession forcing Whitewater to punt. As the Johnnies took over, they moved the ball efficiently down the field 76-yards in 12 plays capping off the drive with an 11-yard TD pass from Joe Boyle to Jakob Redding and the Johnnies led 7-0. This would be the only score the Johnnies would have on the day, as the offense was held essentially silent by the tough Warhawks defense after this initial drive.

The remainder of the first half the Johnnie defense continued it’s stingy ways by only allowing field goals and the half-time score was Warhawks 9 Johnnies 7. The Johnnies went into the locker-room at the half on a high note as they defense held strong on a goal line stand as time expired on the Warhawks.

The second half was all Warhawks as they finished their drives and scored touchdowns instead of field goals as they did in the first half .The Warhawks scored 28 unanswered second half points.

The Johnnies lost Joe Luke to an ankle injury and Joe Boyle to a knee injury in the second half and they did not return. Ryan Wimmer, who was shaken up in the first half, returned to play in the second half, only to experience what was reported to be a mild concussion and he did not return after this injury.

The 2008 season comes to a bittersweet ending. We all know at the beginning of each new season that only one team in the nation will emerge victorious on the field their last game of the year, this year it was not the Johnnies, but there is a lot to be proud of in the 2008 season.

To the team in general winning the MIAC Championship outright was a significant accomplishment and something that you can look back on with pride as the sting of this most recent play-off loss dissipates.

To the seniors you can be proud of the fact that you played for one of the great gentlemen of the game, John Gagliardi. You can be proud of the team and individual honors you may have received during your 4 years at St. Johns. You can be proud of the friendships you have built; these will be your friends for life. You have a special bond that you can’t explain to those who have not experienced what you have together with your teammates. You can be proud of the fact that as a Johnnie you will be able to face the real world in a few short months prepared to be a productive member of society. You are now receiving your official invitation to join the Johnnie Nation and to follow the Johnnies home and away. You are invited to join the tailgate parties before the game to see game day from a different perspective.

To the parents thank you for sending your son to St Johns to be part of a community that, among other things, includes Johnnie football. You may be from greater-Minnesota or from the Twin Cities metropolitan area, perhaps you are from out of state, it doesn’t matter where you start, you and your son are now part of the Johnnie Nation. You brought him to St. Johns 4 years ago as a teen-aged boy; perhaps mom shed a tear on Freshmen move in day. You can now be reassured that he will be leaving St. Johns shortly as a man who will go on to do great things.

To the coaching staff thanks for teaching this team that even if it looks like a hopeless situation, as it did early in the year, that by taking on the task at hand you can accomplish your goals. The 30th MIAC Championship in school history was unexpected after the loss to Bethel, but by keeping the team focused you helped them to achieve this goal.

To the underclassmen you now know what is in front of you. You have played in big games and you have won some and have lost some. There is work to do, yet you have the advantage of knowing what you have to do in order to reach the top. This is your team now; it’s up to you to carry on the tradition of excellence and to take the team to the next level.

Well, here we go! After five straight win-or-else games in MIAC play, the Johnnies have reached the ultimate win-or-else portion of the season: the NCAA D-III Playoffs. Up first: only the defending national champion UW-Whitewater Warhawks. Piece o’ cake, right? Yeah…no.

Do our fearless fortune-tellers see the third straight UWW win over SJU or is the “third time the charm” for the Johnnies, much like UWW’s own third crack at Mount Union in the 2007 Stagg Bowl? Let’s find out.

DuffMan: I’m having nightmares of the 2005 game between these teams. Although, if this season has shown us anything, it’s that you can never discount the “Johnnie Magic”, I think UWW is another caliber of team than the MIAC has produced this season. I hope I’m wrong, but don’t foresee this one going well for the Johnnies. UW-Whitewater 34, St. John’s 7.

DustySJU: The familiar sound of fans erupting in the last seconds of play continued this past Saturday in Northfield. This time it was in regulation play and for the MIAC championship. Since October 11th The Johnnie Footballers have done nothing but win. It hasn’t always been in predictable fashion but never the less the results have been positive. Why should this Saturday be any different? Although the Warhawks have just one defeat by one point this season their performance has been uneven also. Unfortunately for the Warhawks that “Johnnie magic” keeps working its mojo! St. John’s 27, UW-Whitewater 24.

Mr.Shoes: We’re not losing to ****ing Whitewater. St. John’s 16, UW-Whitewater 13.
(Billy Beane’s “s*** doesn’t work in the playoffs”, will mine?)

sjusection105: Johnnies Football version 2008 has had some twists and turns, ups and downs with just enough Johnnie Magic sprinkled in. The trip to Whitewater has become a familiar one for the Johnnies and I think the third time will be the charm. This game pits two of the four stingiest defenses in all of Division III football. Don’t look for an offensive highlight reel from this game. St. John’s 7, UW-Whitewater 6.

TC: The playoffs were supposed to be the proving grounds for my theory that, while the Johnnies may be a little down this season, the extent of the supposed downturn was exaggerated by how good the rest of the MIAC has become. Unfortunately, the Johnnies drew about as tough an opponent as possible for a first round playoff game.

It’s possible that the Johnnies will be matched up against the toughest offense AND toughest defense they’ve faced all season on Saturday, and for a team that has already lost two games and struggled in a handful of others, that’s a tough combination to overcome. I’m not too concerned on the defensive side of the ball. While the Warhawks have a skilled offense, they prefer to move the ball on the ground, which plays right into the Johnnies’ stregth.

I don’t see how St. John’s is going to score enough points to stay competitive. The Johnnies struggled to put up points against teams like Concordia and Carleton that spent the rest of their seasons in shootouts with nearly everyone else they played. At the same time UW-Whitewater, playing in one of the toughest conferences in the nation, only allowed one opponent to score more than 16 points all season.

I sure hope I’m wrong. As the Johnnies proved in the 2003 Stagg Bowl, anything can happen in a one game playoff. If St. John’s hopes to advance past this weekend, their best bet is the same kind of game they’ve been winning all year: a low scoring, hard fought contest that goes down to the wire. Unfortunately, I just don’t see it happening. UW-Whitewater 24, St. John’s 7.

The Johnnies are traveling to Tom Pattison's corner of Wisconsin for the third time in four years. He called the first two visits on the radio and will be doing so again on Saturday. How have the Warhawks looked in defending their 2007 title? What does he see happening in this game?

Tom Pattison (aka Voice on the D3football.com Post Patterns) has been the “radio voice” of UW-Whitewater football and basketball since 1988. Warhawk football games are broadcast live on WKCH (KOOL 106.5) and streamed online.

Five years ago, Pattison developed Warhawkfootball.com, a website that features Warhawk football on a daily basis, 365 days a year. The site includes the News Wire that features newspaper-style stories that “puts a face” on the players and program.

Pattison’s other job is being the marketing and promotions coordinator for UW-Whitewater football. The promotion this week: KOOL 106.5 2008 Playoff Rally Rags to be handed out to fans as they enter Perkins Stadium on Saturday.

In other words – all Warhawks, all the time!

Tom Pattison (L) and Gary Douglas

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team heads into the NCAA Division III Playoffs four a fourth consecutive season. After national runner-up finishes to perennial powerhouse Mount Union College in 2005 and 2006, the Warhawks finally “knocked the door down” with a 31-21 win over the Purple Raiders in 2007 for UW-W’s first national football championship.

The Warhawks enter the 2008 playoffs following a three-year run to the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. The St. Johns Johnnies have been a familiar playoff foe for Whitewater on the playoff trail. The Hawks beat the Johnnies 34-7 in 2005 second round action, and 17-14 in third round 2006 action. Both games were played at UW-Whitewater’s Perkins Stadium.

After being moved to the North Region in 2007, the Warhawks are back in the West this year. For the third time in the past four years, it is the Johnnies and Warhawks in Whitewater at Perkins Stadium… Here we go again!

St. John’s fans know all about having great atmosphere on gameday at Clemens Stadium. The atmosphere at Perkins Stadium in Whitewater is also incredible. Visiting fans from across the country consider the pregame tailgating outstanding. Fans have the opportunity to enjoy adult beverages in the Perk’s parking lot without police interference (assuming laws and ordinances are being observed).

Inside Perkins Stadium, Johnnie fans will notice a new scoreboard with video board equal in size to the video boards at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison. Great job last weekend Gophers! Perkins Stadium also had a FieldTurf surface installed prior to the season. My marketing motto for Warhawk football is: Saturdays at Perkins Stadium are much more than JUST a football game.

One change to Perkins Stadium on Saturday will be all seating in the large grandstands (10,000) on the home side of the field. The move has been made following a complaint by an Eau Claire fan last month about the condition of the visiting bleachers. Following consultation with UW-Whitewater officials, it has been decided that the entire section behind the St. John’s bench (1000 seats) will be closed off to the public due to safety concerns for Saturday’s game.

Another aspect of Saturday’s SJU at UW-Whitewater matchup is the rivalry between the two conferences. When the Warhawks and Johnnies met back in 2005, Whitewater was just arriving on the national scene. Johnnie posters on the D3football.com message board were brutal towards Whitewater and the WIAC. Warhawk fans didn’t know what to make of the posts. Many thought it was the “big, bad, bully” trying to intimidate the fledgling Warhawks. 2005 result: Johnnie meltdown and a 34-7 loss at Perkins Stadium.

With the loss came a begrudging amount of Johnnie fan support for Warhawk fans.

2006, more respect on the message boards and another Warhawk win, 17-14.

This season, Warhawk and other WIAC fans are finally getting it. Johnnie fans enjoy posting on message boards, be it about football or not. Maybe it’s because of the lack of excitement in Central Minnesota. (just kidding)

Actually most Warhawk message board posters finally got it. They discovered that Johnnie football fans are among the best in the nation and we look forward to a Perkins Stadium parking lot full of purple and red clad fans for a morning of pregame tailgating.

For SJU fans heading to Whitewater for the game, tune in WFAW (AM 940) for Saturday morning Sports Line which will be broadcast live from Perkins Stadium. Hopefully a couple Johnnie fans will be available to join us on the air.

Also for the Johnnie “road warrior fans”, join Gary Douglas and me for the broadcast of Saturday’s game on WKCH (KOOL 106.5).

The 2008 Warhawks are back in the playoffs despite losing 24 seniors from the 2007 national championship squad, including 17 starters. Headlining the ’07 seniors was Justin Beaver. The three-time All-American running back finished his career as the second-leading rusher in NCAA Division III history.

Many wondered who would “replace” Beaver at running back this season. Levell Coppage (5-foot-8, 180 – Oak Park, Ill) made it clear early-on in 2008 that he was capable of being UW-Whitewater’s primary tailback. Coppage burst onto the scene in week two in a road game against nationally-ranked UW-Eau Claire. The former Illinois All-State running back gained 220 yards on 42 carries including two touchdowns in his second game in Warhawk purple, a 16-14 Whitewater win.

Coppage enters the Saturday’s game vs. St. Johns with 1276 yards rushing and scoring a team- and conference-high 20 touchdowns. The touchdowns rank second in Warhawk football history, trailing only Justin Beaver’s 24 TDs in 2005. The 20 TD’s does break the team’s regular season touchdown record. Beaver scored 18 touchdowns during the 2005 regular season. Coppage’s 1,276 yards also broke Chad Wurth’s freshman rushing record of 1,207 yards in 2000.

This season’s starting quarterback, Jeff Donovan (6-foot-5, 187 –Wauwatosa/East) was scheduled to be the Warhawks’ starting quarterback in 2007. Enter Danny Jones who transferred to UW-Whitewater from California Lutheran in late summer. Jones was a key cog in leading UW-W to the national title both with his arm and his legs.

Donovan enters Saturday’s game with an extremely efficient 1,712 yards passing and nine touchdowns, including a solid 63.2 percent completion rate. Injury forced him to miss the Hawks’ week nine win over Stout.

Donovan entered last week’s game listed as questionable. Jeff responded with one of his best games of the season statistically… 12-16 for 231 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. The mark for Donovan has been his consistency.

Defensively, the ’08 Warhawks are the best of the past four teams in the most important statistic. Whitewater ranks No. 2 in the nation giving up just 10.7 points per game. With SJU ranked No. 4 in the nation, Saturday’s game could be a low-scoring affair.

Whitewater’s ’08 defense is in the same mold as the past three years: physical and with the ability to run to the ball. The Hawks defense gives up just 75 yards rushing per game. They have given up just two rushing touchdowns during the regular season.

Junior placekicker, Jeff Schebler, became NCAA Division III’s all-time leading field goal kicker last week by kicking his 53rd field goal.

Is the 2008 edition of UW-Whitewater football capable of repeating as NCAA Division III champions? The difference between this year and the previous three years is the youth on the team. This year’s team only has only six seniors. With youth has come some inconsistency this season. The Warhawks have the talent to beat any team in the country, but at times have shown inconsistency that could prove troubling in the playoffs.

A playoff game against SJU is what playoff football is all about. The Johnnies, under legendary coach John Gagliardi, are making their 23rd postseason appearance. They won Division III titles in 1976 and 2003.

Second year UW-W head coach Lance Leipold calls it ‘a privilege to compete against a school with such a rich tradition and a coaching legend.

Look for the Johnnies to enter Perkins Stadium on Saturday well prepared, and very capable of beating the Warhawks. It will be imperative for Whitewater to play at a high level to advance to the second round of the playoffs. I believe they will!

Final Score Projection: UW-Whitewater 28, St. John’s 10.

At 4 a.m. this Saturday I will be leaving my house in Woodbury to make the trek to Whitewater, Wisconsin to cheer on our miraculous 2008 Johnnie Squad as they take on the U.W.W. Warhawks. Let’s be honest, with three truly unbelievable victories this year (against UST, St. Olaf and of course Carleton) how can anyone doubt that Rich Hall, SJU ’63 is indeed in Heaven bending God’s ear each Saturday afternoon screaming for victory! Dallas Cowboy fans like to say that they’re America’s Team. That’s fine with me as all in the Johnnie Nation are aware that St. John’s is God’s team! (Fr. Don gave him a “B” in Theology and Lurkin Durkin had him on double secret probation!)

For this week’s tilt I will be traveling with my very good friend and fellow Johnnie Football supporter Huy Tran. Many of you in the Johnnie Nation have been met Huy either at the S-festivities or via an introduction by Wick as he has Huy make the “rounds” at these events. And if you were at the Tommie or Auggie game you were introduced to Huy’s culinary expertise by sampling his now famous and top secret chicken wings! Therefore his newly minted moniker of “The Wingman”!

I met Huy roughly 4 years ago as we were standing (in what we now call our usual spot) next to each other at Clemens Stadium and struck up a conversation about who was what # on the team and so on. And now as my wife says I found a fellow soul mate in regards to support, knowledge and love of all that is SJU and Johnnie Football. Huy is not a graduate of SJU, rather he graduated from the University of Minnesota but saw the light and is now and forever a JOHNNIE! To this end we in the Johnnie Nation have “adopted” him into my graduating Johnnie Class of 1988.

Huy began following the Johnnies during John’s historic march to 409 victories and resulting 2003 National Championship. You see Huy is an avid follower of all historic sporting events and records. If you can “corner him” at the S-festivities you can hear about all of his prized possessions and times where he has been in attendance during a historic sporting event. You will be amazed at what he has witnessed! Huy attends EVERY game and is a season ticket holder. Heck, I’m an alumni and I don’t even own season tickets! But Huy does not even use these tickets; rather he keeps them, along with all of the game day programs as part of his historic sports memorabilia collection. Now that is what I call loyalty and devotion to all that is SJU! Therefore he is truly eligible to be an honorary Johnnie!

The fact that Huy has been so warmly welcomed into the Johnnie Nation (The Saladin’s, Sharpe’s, Stanton’s, and of course the JF.com/tailgating gang always warmly welcomes him at each game) speaks volumes about how truly great this unrivaled Nation is. We are and always will be a welcoming, friendly, devoted group. I say that all in the Nation should be proud of themselves. I thank you for your kindness and say that this is yet another example of why I am, and always will be proud to be a JOHNNIE.

In this, the most unlikeliest of seasons, it is probably fitting that St. John’s would draw as its 1st round playoff opponent the defending national champions from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. But the way things have gone this year, an upset victory against the team from the land of cheese shouldn’t surprise anyone.

Since dropping two out of the first three conference games, the Johnnies have pulled the rabbit out of the hat to end up as MIAC Champions once again. Figuring the probabilities of exactly what would have to occur with wins and losses by the other conference teams surely would have kept chain-gang master and math whiz Dr. Dumonceaux busy for quite a while. The one constant in the equation: St. John’s would have to win the rest of its games. It wasn’t always pretty, and it often didn’t even seem possible, but win they did.

So with an unlikely MIAC Championship built on unlikely victories, combined with the unlikely assortment of outcomes of other conference games, why not just keep the string going? Should we not come to expect the unexpected and knock off the defending champs on the road to the Stagg Bowl?

Well, we are just where we want to be. We have worked all season to get to this point. Saturday is going to be alot of fun and we hope that you can join us in Whitewater for the event. Moustaches are growing and by now even those, like myself, who cannot grow facial hair are starting to show some sort of “dirt” on our upper lips. I thought I would take some time this week and share a story with you all.

Alot of players, past and present, have their own special stories about the playoffs or road trips in general. Some of them are of their roommate, some of them are about experiences in new parts of the U.S., and some are just plain unmentionable. Lucky enough for Johnnie Nation, my story of the road is mentionable.

This particular event happened in my sophomore year. We were on the road facing Whitworth in Spokane, Washington. The Friday before the game, the team went to the Golden Corral buffet. The food was wonderful and everyone seemed to get their fill. Still as we were eating, Jason Primus and Andrew Salvato started to tell me jokes from the otherside of the table. During this joke telling session, Primus started to stab Salvato with his fork and make weird sounds while doing it. I was trying to take a drink of water at that time and I started to laugh as I was swallowing. Needless to say, the reaction caused me to gag. The next thing I knew I was trying to hold in vomit. My hand got up to my mouth a little bit late and the projectile spilled out the sides of my hand. Luckily no one on the left side of me was hit, but the poor soul sitting next to me on my right was trying to eat his mashed potatoes when something fell to his plate. Nick Gunderson immediately dropped his fork in complete disgust. After a few well-deserved punches, I got up and got Gundy some more potatoes. I think the lesson learned here is not to eat at the same table as Primus and Salvato. The next year these same two tried to get me to vomit again, but this time I was prepared and disaster was averted.

We have a tough one coming up on Saturday in Whitewater and hopefully the only projectiles flying there will be of the pigskin variety. We hope to see you all there and be on the look out for more “Inside the Huddle.”

The Johnnies and the Warhawks face off yet again in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. What can we expect to see from the Warhawks?

Linebacker Jace Rindahl and the rest of the Whitewater defense hope to end the Johnnies season for the third time in four years (Photo by Jeff Seisser, Warhawkfootball.com)

For the third time in four years, the Johnnies will make the 380 mile trip southwest to the University of Wisconsin Whitewater to take on the Warhawks in the NCAA playoffs. The 2007 national champion Warhawks have one blemish on their record this season—a 17-16 loss to the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point. Gone are Justin Beaver and Danny Jones, but the Warhawks have still averaged 35 points per game. The road to the Stagg Bowl runs through Whitewater, and the Johnnies are set to tackle their first road block on Saturday.

Junior quarterback Jeff Donovan (6-4, 200) has been a little banged up this season but played last week. He’s expected to make the start versus the Johnnies. He’s completed 135 of 212 passes for 1712 yards with eight interceptions. He’s kept the ball 59 times for 134 yards, as well. Should Donovan not be able to play, sophomore Bruce Langer (6-1, 195) will fill in. Langer has completed 16 of 34 passes for 268 yards with one interception. Sophomore Aaron Rusch (5-10, 176) is their leading receiver. He’s caught 66 passes for 884 yards. Junior Jordan Wells (6-0, 187), sophomore Adam Brandes (6-3, 194), and senior tight end Nick Slupski (6-2, 245) also figure into the receiving mix. Wells has caught 32 passes for 381 yards, Brandes has 10 receptions for 78 yards, and Slupski has 15 catches for 129 yards. The ground game is the Warhawks’ bread and butter, though. Freshman tailback Levell Coppage (5-8, 180) handles the bulk of the carries. He’s gained 1276 yards on 254 carries. Spelling Coppage is sophomore Antwan Anderson (5-10, 190) who has 62 carries for 408 yards. Leading the way for Coppage is junior fullback Max Wasikowski (5-11, 237). He rarely touches the ball. Composing the offensive front are senior tackles Mike Sherman (6-0, 280) and Rob Gilbreath (6-2, 280), freshman guards Matt Weber (6-3, 285) and Robbie Ustruck (6-2, 306), and junior center Garth Coats (6-2, 280).

Defensively, the Warhawks are giving up just 11 points per game. Their stout run defense has only surrendered 75 rushing yards a game. Senior linebacker Jace Rindahl (6-2, 236) heads the way for Whitewaters, recording 66 tackles, three interceptions, and five and a half tackles for loss this season. Joining him at the linebacker positions are junior Kyle Supianoski (6-0, 225) and sophomore Max Ford (6-1, 230). Anchoring the defensive line is junior end Anthony White (5-11, 224). White has made 34 tackles including four and a half sacks this season. Senior Mike Dufrane (6-4, 300), junior Justin Ankley (6-4, 285), and sophomore John Baldwin (6-3, 262) fill the remaining spots on the line. The defensive backfield is composed of all juniors—cornerbacks Troney Shumpert (5-8, 162) and Jeremy Diebert (5-7, 168) along with safeties Zach Christopherson (5-10, 200) and Paul Wick (5-9, 186). Deibert has three interceptions, Wick and Christopherson each have two interceptions, and Shumpert has one.

Junior kicker Jeff Schebler (5-11, 184) averages 59 yards per kickoff. He has made 14 of 16 field goals and 40 of 45 extra points. Sophomore Kris Rosholt (6-3, 229) averages 37 yards per punt. Handling punt returns is Rusch. He’s returned 20 punts for 158 yards. Shrumpert and freshman Aaron Samplawski (5-8, 180) both return kicks. Shrumpert has returned 11 kicks for 199 yards and Samplawski has returned 11 kicks for 334 yards.

Perkins Stadium received many upgrades in the offseason, including a new scoreboard, video replay screen, and artificial turf. Fans and players alike are in for a real treat. Again this week, the game will come down to how the Johnnie offense will perform. Their defense has proven reliable throughout the course of 2008 and should be able to keep the Warhawk offense under control, but it remains to be seen which Johnnie offense will take the field.

This year marks the third visit to Whitewater, WI for the traveling Stiftungsfestivities. For those who have attended past years, the pre-game was far more enjoyable than the actual game itself. Wisconsinites pride themselves on gratuitous beer-drinking and grilled meat-eating so tailgating comes naturally to them. Games at UWW are no exception.

The fun starts at 8:00am for the 12:00 noon game time. Johnnie Red will be there with his famous burgers. Many others will be bringing meats and beverages, but as always it is wise to bring your own to contribute. Despite the relaxed Wisconsin attitudes toward the outdoor consumption of adult beverages, red cups rules remain in effect.

Go Johnnies!

Directions

From I-94, take State Rd 59 at Exit 163. There should be a sign along the freeway indicating the exit for the University. Follow 59 about 2 miles to County N. Turn left onto N and drive straight east about 11 miles into Whitewater. County N becomes Walworth Ave at US-12. Go just over a mile past US-12 to South Prince Street. Turn left and head north, crossing West Main Street and traveling next to campus to West Starin Road. Turn right onto Starin and then left onto Graham Ave to the Stadium.

Important Seating Announcement

UW-Whitewater will not have seating on the visitor’s sideline for the game on Saturday due to reconstruction of the existing bleachers. This is not a problem, as the stadium has plentiful seating on the home side (seats for roughly 10k). Go to the game preview page on the UWW web site and scroll down to the SJU logo to see diagrams of the seating situation.
