Letting a “Smart Guy” have his say (again)
In the spirit of good sportsmanship and fair play and bipartisanship and all that jazz, we’re bringing back the “View from [opponent]” feature from last season. It may only last this week, but there is no better week this season to include it. The MIAC championship is on the line and special situations call for special articles.
Johnnies vs. Knights: Title Time!
Five weeks ago, the Johnnies had dropped their second game of the season and hopes of a MIAC championship were set aside by most fans. Since then, they have rattled off four straight wins, and with some key losses by other MIAC teams, they find themselves in a position to claim an outright MIAC title and the automatic berth into the NCAA playoffs that goes along with it.

Johnnies vs. Oles
The St. Olaf football team has been on the rise for several seasons. In recent years, match-ups between the Johnnies and Oles have brought the excitement of unblemished records and MIAC title implications. St. Olaf has ground out a three and three record thus far in 2008. In what is turning out to be a wild year in the MIAC, the Johnnies are carrying a 5-2 record. Not yet mathematically eliminated from contention for the MIAC crown, the Johnnies find themselves in a must-win situation if they want to taste a playoff berth in 2008.
Weekly Update — the MIAC race
Well, another week with a win means the MIAC title is still within reach for the Johnnies, albeit a longshot. Let’s take a look where we are now.
Johnnies v. Tommies LXXVII
Even though the St. Thomas Tommies have dropped the last 10 meetings with their arch rival, the St. John’s Johnnies, they have to feel pretty confident about their chances when the teams meet for the 77th time this weekend in St. Paul. The Johnnies, uncharacteristically, have already been saddled with two losses this season. Meanwhile, down on Summit Ave., new head coach Glenn Caruso has the Tommies playing as well as they have in recent memory.
The MIAC Race…slow and steady wins it?
While the Johnnies have struggled at times this year, it is important to remember that SJU has lost two games by two plays it failed to make…and as such, perhaps the hope of its 30th MIAC title isn’t over for the Jays. So let’s take a look at the MIAC race.
