Webster’s offers this as a definition of family: an association of people who share common beliefs and/or activities. Seems to me that the publisher over at Webster’s could have saved some ink and simply published this: Family: being a Johnnie!
And for me this proposed definition would be just fine. Being a second generation Johnnie (My [...]

It’s a Family Thing
A Bye and a Thank you
Now I understand how fans of other MIAC Football programs feel at the mid point of the season. Any and all hope for post season play and success is long gone. All that remains is playing out the “string” for pride and gaining momentum for the off season. Not an enjoyable feeling but it happens [...]
Such is Life
Follow me on Twitter throughout each and every Johnnie football game (mmelsen).
Mid-October 2006 and I receive an acceptance letter from St. John’s University. Most of my friends would take until May to decide. Me? I decided Johnnie-on-the-spot that SJU was the place for me. My first Johnnie game as a “soon-to-be-Johnnie” was led by an [...]
Memories
“We do not remember days; we remember moments.”
–Cesare Pavese, Poet
120 losses and 13 undefeated regular seasons in John Gagliardi’s 57 years coaching Johnnie football. This past weekend’s loss opened up a wound that had yet to heal from the 2002 OT loss at Eau Claire. No, the season is not over. No, the Johnnies [...]
Tie Game
Tie game, Little Johnnies 6, Little Blugolds 6. I stand at the “line of scrimmage” and yell out “Red 1-Hot Route-Hot Route-Blue Pants-set-hut-set-hut-hike.” I drop back and immediately start scrambling after Blugold yells “BLITZZZ.” Johnnie 1 has broken off the line fast and executes a quick fake to the post.
We call it HOME
The 56321, Collegeville, SJU, School, the “Ville”, Harvard behind the pines, the Holy Land, and the greatest place on earth. These are just some of the titles that the Nation that is Unrivaled hangs on those beloved acres of land in Stearns County- where all of us spent the best four years of our lives. But in the end, for each and every Johnnie, it has always been and always will be HOME!
SJU #4… Only One Jersey Color Needed!
While the Johnnies and the Nation that is unrivaled “enjoy” an off week (thanks to Macalester) the rest of the Football world will be all a twitter over the return of Brett Farve to Lambeau Field. The excruciating anticipation for the Packer faithful is due to Farve continually looking to mimic a chameleon with regard [...]
The SJU Unofficial Underground News doesn’t take a bye week — #9
Yeah, it’s a bye week for the Jays, and you may be getting antsy. But to tell the truth, although it’s strange not to be heading off somewhere to watch our Johnnies on Saturday, this off-week comes at a very good time. Junior QB Joe Boyle reinjured his gimpy thumb in the first quarter in what should have been a breather game for St. John’s against St. Olaf.

Lonely Boat
As the most widely read contributor to this website you may have been surprised to see my writing partner TouchDownTommy, AKA Nacho Libre, posting first thing Monday in place of my typical early morning composition.
As a budding college football observer, TDT is finding his niche among the writers at JohnnieFootball.com and was in creative mode following his attendance at the Cobber game Saturday on the UST campus.
Trip Down Snelling Ave…
I am writing this week exhausted from the incredible sports weekend in the Twin Cities. Saturday the Gophers predictably fell to the Badgers for the umpteenth time and the Johnnies made a valiant comeback to shock the Royals in Collegeville. Sunday the Twins thrilled the 51 thousand at the Dome and those tuned in on [...]
