In a season that has seen the Johnnies come up just short in close losses to two of their main rivals, Concordia and Bethel, St. John’s was able to keep their dim playoff hopes alive by pulling out a narrow win of their own for the second straight week, knocking off the upset-minded St. Olaf Oles 20-14 in overtime. While explosive, high scoring offenses have become the norm in Collegeville, it is becoming more and more apparent that the Johnnies will have to rely on their stout defense to lead them to their destiny this season–and once again, that defense showed up when it needed to in Northfield.

Saturday was another gorgeous day for college football in Minnesota and for those who made the trip to the picturesque St. Olaf campus your support for Johnnie Football was rewarded. Not only did the clear blue skies serve as the perfect background to the myriads of deciduous golds and bronze, the Cardinal Red displayed many of the October tricks which have made this season so very interesting and entertaining.

After pulling out what can only be described as a “miracle victory” (or, rather, an entirely predictable instance of St. Thomas falling on its face) last week in St. Paul, the Johnnies look to keep their slim playoff hopes alive in Northfield. The Oles are in the midst of a disappointing season themselves, so tensions [...]

So this Saturday I am going to make the trip to Northfield (my first) with one of my very best friends who just happens to be an Ole. When you see Johnnie Tats roll into the pre-game tailgate road tripping S-festivities this Saturday with an Ole buddy who will be sporting Ole gear you will understand that I have not gone around the bend or changed allegiances.

The St. Olaf football team has been on the rise for several seasons. In recent years, match-ups between the Johnnies and Oles have brought the excitement of unblemished records and MIAC title implications. St. Olaf has ground out a three and three record thus far in 2008. In what is turning out to be a wild year in the MIAC, the Johnnies are carrying a 5-2 record. Not yet mathematically eliminated from contention for the MIAC crown, the Johnnies find themselves in a must-win situation if they want to taste a playoff berth in 2008.

Keeping with the tradition of Bethel and St. Thomas, here is the information for this week’s away-from-Collegeville tailgate. Unlike the previous two, however, this will not be on campus. Please read the following invitation from Jeff Hanson of the Owatonna SJU Alumni Chapter for details.
