For those among the estimated 6,000 in attendance at Laird Stadium in Northfield on Saturday for the coronation of an MIAC champion, numbers can do little quantify what you saw. Not only did the Carleton Knights, have a shot at the perennially powerful St. John’s Johnnies, at home, for the championship, but they had them on the ropes in the last minute. In the end, Kurt Ramler, a spread offense, trick plays, and a hearty helping of pluck weren’t enough to topple some well timed Johnnie Magic. Here’s a look at some numbers from Saturday’s 14-10, come-from-behind win and the regular season as a whole.

The Augsburg Auggies took a gigantic leap forward on the football field in 2007, finishing the season 5-5 after winning a total of 4 games the previous 3 seasons. But the proverbial rising tide didn’t lift all boats for the Auggies—they lost their 10th straight matchup with the St. John’s Johnnies by an embarrassing 62-7 margin.

In a season that has seen the Johnnies come up just short in close losses to two of their main rivals, Concordia and Bethel, St. John’s was able to keep their dim playoff hopes alive by pulling out a narrow win of their own for the second straight week, knocking off the upset-minded St. Olaf Oles 20-14 in overtime. While explosive, high scoring offenses have become the norm in Collegeville, it is becoming more and more apparent that the Johnnies will have to rely on their stout defense to lead them to their destiny this season–and once again, that defense showed up when it needed to in Northfield.

Even though the St. Thomas Tommies have dropped the last 10 meetings with their arch rival, the St. John’s Johnnies, they have to feel pretty confident about their chances when the teams meet for the 77th time this weekend in St. Paul. The Johnnies, uncharacteristically, have already been saddled with two losses this season. Meanwhile, down on Summit Ave., new head coach Glenn Caruso has the Tommies playing as well as they have in recent memory.

There was a different feeling in the air this year when the St. John’s Johnnies took on the Bethel Royals, looking for their first win between these two teams since 2005. The weather was warmer, the crowd smaller. Most importantly, for the first time in three seasons, there was no MIAC conference crown on the line as both teams, highly touted coming into the year, entered the contest with disappointing, blemished records.

Any time the Johnnies outgain their opponent by a nearly two-to-one margin, like they did Saturday when they rolled up 307 yards of total offense against only 183 for the Concordia Cobbers, you can almost assuredly put another tally in John Gagliardi’s win column. In Gagliardi’s 589th game as a college coach, breaking Eddie [...]

In last week’s column, I mentioned that the sun always shines on Johnnie Football. Um, yeah… It’s apparent that Mother Nature is not a regular reader of JohnnieFootball.com.
Fortunately, the football gods were on the Johnnies’ side on Saturday. In a game that was controlled by St. John’s at the line [...]

The 2007 St. John’s football team entered the offseason with a host of unanswered questions: Were they really 30 points worse than Central, the team that knocked them out of the playoffs by a stunning 37-7 margin? Who would step up to fill the void left by record-breaking quarterback Alex Kofoed? Had Bethel unseated [...]

With 3:56 of the fourth quarter showing on the game clock on a dreary November afternoon in Arden Hills, the 2007 Johnnie defense took the field for the season-defining drive. Clearly in their sights were an undefeated regular season, an MIAC championship, redemption for Bethel’s stunning win in Collegeville the season prior, and a [...]
Johnnie Preseason Primer, Part II: The Offense
- Posted on:
- 29 August 2008 12:00 pm
The 2007 St. John’s offense was virtually unstoppable, passing at will, running unmolested through holes the size of small homes, a true sight to behold—on the home turf at Clemens Stadium, that is. The disjointed, sputtering offense that showed up in the Johnnies’ road contests was another thing altogether.
The passing game, led by four-year starter [...]
