Young Pipers Face a Challenge

First-year head coach Jim Good and his Hamline Pipers welcome the visiting Johnnies to cozy Klas Field this Saturday. Good, a Linfield College graduate who has spent the past 6 seasons at Texas Lutheran, faces a daunting challenge in preparing for the Johnnies this week. Hamline has been one of the most hapless Johnnie opponents in recent years. Since 2000, the Johnnies have outscored the Pipers 382-20. In fact, the last time the Pipers scored more than 7 points in a game versus the Johnnies was 1998, when they lost 49-13. Based on their 2-4 (0-4 MIAC) record this season, I don’t see things changing Saturday.

This week presents some interesting challenges.  The Johnnies travel to Hamline to take on the Pipers who are really struggling again this year.  As a fan, a win this week for the J’s appears to be a foregone conclusion.  I know the Johnnie coaching staff won’t let this enter into the psyche’s of the players, but it [...]

Another beautiful Minnesota fall day and an impressive performance by the Johnnies on both sides of the ball.

Patrick’s was great and the Patty Melt was quite good. Just not the same as being outside and enjoying a Stiftungsfest burger.

Hollingsworth Field is a beautiful addition to the Gustavus Adolphus campus. The seating is close to the field and provides great site lines. I took a short cut in and missed the entrance. If I had known the ticket lines were so long I would have told the rest of you how easy it was to get in through the tunnel the team uses to enter. Note: I have an MIAC pass; I didn’t cheat the Gusties out of any money.

The scoreboard tells the story of the 1st half (I like the yardage display)

For the Gustavus Gusties, this weekend’s match-up with the Johnnies was much anticipated. It was a chance to show off their brand new stadium to a Homecoming crowd of over 5,000 and a chance to knock off highly-ranked St. John’s to salvage a season that was slipping away after a strong start. Alas, [...]

Planning a tailgate party prior to a college football game which features your favorite team can be extremely stressful or very relaxing, it’s all what you make of it. A tailgate party is meant to be a gathering to celebrate friendship and good times and is not meant to stress you out. As Bobby McFerrin [...]

It was a beautiful day for football in Saint Peter today, and the Johnnies quickly dispatched the Gustie’s hope for a homecoming victory. The Johnnies started strong and never looked back as they notched a 40-0 defeat of the home team.
The game started on a sour note as Gustie John Ostertag’s opening kickoff sailed [...]

While the Johnnies should be coming into this week’s game flying high after beating St. Olaf 30-29, the same cannot be said of the Gusties on their Homecoming weekend. Gustavus started the year 3-0, running their winning streak to 7 games dating back to 2006. Now, after starting the season with such high hopes, they [...]

2007 has been a season of change for the Gustavus Adolphus football team—there’s been a new stadium, new faces in the coaching staff, and an entirely new no huddle offense. Another thing the team is hoping to change is their recent history against St. John’s—the Golden Gusties have lost their last 9 meetings with [...]

Johnny BloodJohnny “Blood”

Shake Down The Thunder, The Creation of Notre Dame Football is a book chronicling the beginnings of college football, football history and the mecca that has evolved on the South Bend, Indiana campus. On a smaller scale but in a parallel enviroment another catholic university was planting it’s own seed of college football immortality. It was the beginnings of the MIAC that brought football back to campus. But even then, it almost didn’t happen.

The Gustavus football team started 2007 with a bang, rolling up 3 straight wins in addition to the 4 consecutive wins they finished the 2006 season with. They have stumbled the past two weeks with games versus St. Olaf and Bethel. This weekend, the Johnnies will invade Saint Peter in hopes of handing the Gusties their third straight loss. Here’s a rundown of the 2007 Gusties.
