My name is Vic Murphy and I am a 1992 graduate of Saint John’s (should’ve been 1991 but that’s another story for another time). I was raised in Henderson, MN and attended my first Johnnie game in 1985 at St. Thomas. I recall Danny Grant making a big play or two and Don Prybil kicking the winning field goal that day.
I attended many SJU games during the late 80’s and early 90’s and have always attended a game or two each year. One of my younger brothers attended Saint John’s and was on the team during what I call the Blake years. During that time I attended many games hoping to see my younger brother getting some “PT” and became ever more enamored with fall Saturdays in Collegeville. Recently I purchased a decent Canon Digital SLR and have taken pictures when attending Johnnie games.
I am currently a special education teacher at Hopkins High School and live in Saint Paul with my wife and 2 daughters (CSB 2022 and 2026…oh my God!!!)
Some of my favorite Johnnie football memories are:
- Prybil game winning field goal.
- Fultz diving on Mike Ramler fumble in the end zone to score a game-winning touchdown against Simpson in the playoffs.
- Hail Mary vs. Olaf at the end of the first half in 1991 to put the Johnnies up about 56–0.
- Watching Blake Elliott play a lot and make defenders look silly.
- Running around the block of my Highland Park neighborhood in my red long underwear and SJU football sweatshirt waving a red and white pom-pom after the Johnnies beat Mount Union in the Stagg Bowl in 2003…I told my wife I would do it if the Johnnies won and she held me to it. What a wonderful gal she is (not a Bennie however)!
